Time to trend! F+W 11/12

I think every woman should participate in at least one of the many trends for Fall/Winter 2011/12.  Here is a short list of some my favorites to go off of this season, find one that intrigues you & go out and work it!

1. Texture - Silk, fur, sequins, leather, chiffon & wool, to start.  This season it's all about mixing different textures and daring to go a little further than what you think is "normal".  You don't have to look like you just stepped off of the Christian Dior runway, here are your baby steps: go buy a beautiful, button up silk top, roll up the sleeves and throw a faux fur vest over.  Pair with dark straight leg jeans and you've mastered the concept of mixing two very loved textures this season.

Alright, now let's dig a little deeper into the faux fur trend.  It's up to you, go with a little, or a lot. Whether it's in the form of a coat, vest or the trim of a sweater, this trend is a must have and can be pulled off by everyone.  It's more versatile than you think too, and adds "attitude" to every outfit.  Pair with a 70's inspired dress or either denim or leggings, and your casual outfit has stepped up, giving you an effortless-chic look, every fashionista desires.

2. Bold Color Mixes - Go bold or go home! It's the perfect way to add a little pop to your wardrobe this season. Typically fall and winter (the cooler seasons) means more reserved, rich, dark colors: brown, black, navy, deep plum etc, (which by the way, I always love & always look great) but not this time!  These are still very appropriate, but this season the focus is on color infused hues (such as crimson, neon orange, yellow, bright blue and purple).  Not only this, but using these colors in unexpected combinations and being extra creative when putting outfits together.  Pair two pieces from the same color family, then add a contrasting tone to mix up the look. This can work with accessories too, a statement handbag or even a bold lip color can do the same trick.  Color blocking and eye popping tones beat the neutrals this season!

3. Midi Lengths - It's time to embrace the newest length in skirts, dresses and coats!  Options include narrow silhouettes and heavy and light weight fabrics.  Pair the midi length skirts with chunky footwear and a delicate top, while the midi coat can be worn with almost anything: your work trouser, denim, or a dress.  Add a color block midi dress to your wardrobe and you've got two hot trends in one!

4. Capes & Ponchos - Chunky and over sized knits are an on going trend for not only designers but for myself as well. There is nothing like throwing on an over sized sweater; you feel comfortable while looking chic! Ponchos and capes are one of my favorite trends and an essential for the season. They can be found in plaid, tweed, solid & neutral colors, with leather or fur trim, and in both short and longer lengths. Despite the excuses I've heard from clients and friends, you do NOT have to be a certain height or size to rock this look.  Just remember to always pair this with a straighter leg pant or a skinny jean and you're good to go!

5. Femininity: Pleats, Frills & BowsWhile the gender play trend has been floating around for some time now, feminine silhouettes and detailing is something many designers like to preserve. Pleats, frills, rosettes, bows and embroidery are beautiful, feminine features that always make a woman feel good. Pairing pieces with these features instantly updates suits, trousers and skirts, but is not limited for only the "9-5" anymore. Paired with any form of denim (I'd try a denim trouser), or even a faux fur vest really adds an edgy feel to this feminine favorite.
